About the Project
This large-scale block paving driveway transformation was carried out by TM Landscaping for a customer in Ashford, Kent. The existing driveway had reached the end of its life and the customer wanted a complete overhaul — a premium, long-lasting surface that would dramatically improve the kerb appeal of their property. TM Landscaping designed and delivered a stunning dual-surface finish combining a resin-bound tarmac area with large-format herringbone block paving, finished with full channel drainage throughout.

Sub-base preparation and resin surface
With the excavation complete, a compacted type 1 MOT sub-base was laid and levelled across the full footprint of the driveway. The resin-bound tarmac surface was then applied to the main parking areas, creating a smooth, durable and permeable finish. Channel drains were carefully positioned and set into the surface along the right-hand edge of the driveway to manage surface water drainage — a critical requirement for a driveway of this scale.

The block paving was then delivered and carefully stacked across the resin surface ready for laying. The sheer volume of material required for this project — a full large-format herringbone driveway covering the entire frontage — demonstrates the scale of the transformation. All blocks were set out precisely before laying began to ensure perfect lines and a consistent herringbone pattern across the full width of the driveway.

Herringbone block paving installation
With the sub-base prepared and setting out complete, the team began laying the block paving in a classic herringbone pattern. This timeless laying style is one of the most popular choices for driveways across Kent — it's extremely strong underfoot, locks tightly under vehicle loads, and looks outstanding once the kiln dried sand has been brushed in and the surface compacted. Every course was checked for level and alignment as the team worked their way across the full width of the driveway.

With the block paving laid, the team turned their attention to the kerb edging and road connection at the front of the property. A clean, precise edge restraint was installed along the full perimeter, and the connection to the highway at the dropped kerb was carefully finished to meet local authority requirements. The cobblestone feature section at the driveway entrance adds a distinctive detail that sets this Ashford driveway apart.

The finished result
The completed driveway is a remarkable transformation. What was once a tired, worn-out surface is now a sweeping, premium-finish driveway that provides parking for multiple vehicles and has completely transformed the front of the property. The combination of herringbone block paving and resin-bound surface, with full drainage and precision kerb detailing, delivers a result that will last for decades with minimal maintenance.
